Deuteronomy 28 contains passages of scripture that are preached to no end, and believers everywhere lay claim to the abundance of blessing contained within the chapter. Several of it’s scriptures are the high notes of homiletics, proclaimed to sound of a Hammond, but often these blessings are spoken without the conditions that make operational.
Deutoronomy 28:1-13 “”And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: 2 And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God. 3 Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field. 4 Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep. 5 Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store. 6 Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out. 7 The Lord shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face: they shall come out against thee one way, and flee before thee seven ways. 8 The Lord shall command the blessing upon thee in thy storehouses, and in all that thou settest thine hand unto; and he shall bless thee in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. 9 The Lord shall establish thee an holy people unto himself, as he hath sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, and walk in his ways. 10 And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the Lord; and they shall be afraid of thee. 11 And the Lord shall make thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers to give thee. 12 The Lord shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow. 13 And the Lord shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the Lord thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them: 14 And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.
*Romans 11 A Remnant of Israel 1I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying, 3Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life. 4But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal. 5Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. 6And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.
7What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded 8(According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day. 9And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them: 10Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway.*
What exactly does it mean to be blinded here? Some extreme perspectives would draw out the extreme and say “hopelessly enslaved to sin,” but that is not what is being presented here.
- Samson is perhaps the best example of both Deuteronomy and Romans 11. He was blinded, but blindness does not mean death and hopelessness, nor does it create an inability to know that God is sovereign or to repent . Samson was blinded and was still able to acknowledge his sin (Judges 16:28-30).
Judges 16:28-30 28And Samson called unto the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes. 29And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one with his right hand, and of the other with his left. 30And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life.
Spiritual blindness is not a death sentence
- Spiritual sight is clarity of God’s wisdom and the liberty to willingly participate in His plan. It is characterized by access to His covenant blessings and grace to operate by their authority and power.
- Israel once had this while all other Gentiles did not. Now, Israel has been made blind (with the exception of a remnant), and the Gentiles have been given grace which is the ability to see what they once couldn’t.
- Lastly, though Samson lost his strength and sight because of his sin, he did not bow Baal. This may also be a prophetic type and shadow of Israel, caught between two covenants, willing to receive the first but not the second (Genesis 49:14-15). Israel believes in God, but is unable to see He his covenant is spiritual rather than temporal. Therefore they find comfort in a carnal interpretation of their covenant. This, in turn, has caused them to be enslaved to the nations of the world for a season. This is represented by Jacob’s prophetic words to Issachar, his fifth son by his wife, Leah.
Genesis 49:14-15 “14 ‘Issachar is a strong donkey, crouching between the sheepfolds.[b] 15 He saw that a resting place was good, and that the land was pleasant, so he bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant at forced labor.”
So, we the Gentiles currently have the sight that the Israelites once had. In other words, for those who choose to receive the open invitation to receive Jesus, they are able to understand God’s plans and be a willing participant of them. This is what Deuteronomy 28:1-13 speaks of—the authority with which Samson operated and the liberty which gave Israel insight into the heart of God. But like them, we must not consider the conditions.
Romans 11 continued…. The Ingrafting of the Gentiles 11I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy. 12Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness?
* What is Paul Saying? Israel was endowed with so much purpose that their failures opened the door for the world to receive Jesus. Now consider what their fulfilment would create. The resurrection of the saints?
Romans 11 continued…. 13For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office: 14If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them. 15For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead? 16For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.
This provides explanation to the scripture which says “that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.” (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17)
*Romans 11 continued…. 17And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree; 18Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. 19Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in. 20Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: 21For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. 22Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. 23And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again. 24For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?
All Israel Shall Be Saved 25For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. 26And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: 27For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins. 28As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sakes. 29For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. 30For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief: 31Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy. 32For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.
Doxology (Romans 16:25-27; Jude 1:24-25) 33O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! 34For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counseller? 35Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? 36For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.*
Revelation and understanding of Romans 11 is an indicator that one has some level of spiritual sight. Those who fail to understand it are those who walk in some form of unbelief. Usually they have stumbled over the same stumbling blocks and fallen into the same snares as Israel has.
- They are those who believe in some form of religious exclusivity.
- They consider themselves religious elites, more deserving of blessing and power than others.
- They interpret the promises of God carnally before they see them spiritually.
- They are anti-semites in much the same way that Israel was anti-gentile during the old covenant period
Therefore Gentiles must be prepared to suffer consequences similar to Israel’s as much as they were willing to accept Israel’s blessings. These are found where we began—Deuteronomy 28

and ye shall be plucked from off the land whither thou goest to possess it. 64 And the Lord shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone. 65 And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the Lord shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind: 66 And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life: 67 In the morning thou shalt say, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. 68 And the Lord shall bring thee into Egypt again with ships, by the way whereof I spake unto thee, Thou shalt see it no more again: and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for bondmen and bondwomen, and no man shall buy you.
- These scriptures are about the quality of life we live according to the choices we make. This is separate from our spiritual destination./default
- This passage was written to Israel, so it is also worth noting that God is a judge of nations as much as he is of individuals.
Here is where we must remember that God’s word is true and applicable and every sense. We must consider the severity of God that befell Israel, that we, as nations and individuals, are not immune from consequences of God.
Proverbs 6:16-19 16 These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, 19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
Individuals are being punished for these deeds and so are nations. It’s simply a part of God’s law, and you’re not a doom and gloom preacher for reminding people of these truths. You’re encouraging a healthy fear of the Lord which produces wisdom!

- China: Persecution of Christians
- Italy: Home perhaps the most influential and deceptive form of false religion and idolatry
- Texas: Home to many of the largest religious prosperity movements in the country
- New Orleans, Louisiana: Place of Voodoo and witchcraft, sin and debauchery
- California: The sin capital of the world
- New York: the place with the highest percentage of abortions in America (somewhere in the mid-thirties)
- Other countries include Iran(Islam and its persecution, antisemitism, evil and terror), Germany, Spain, Switzerland (Home to CERN and place of high demonic activity), Turkey (known for its antisemitism among other things) and France among others.
